What is a lobbyist, or public affairs consultant?
Lobbyists get their name from the practice of talking to Members of Parliament in the lobby of the
Houses of Parliament, and attempting to persuade them to accept the lobbyist’s point of view. Since democracy is about persuasion and argument, lobbying has been going on for its entire history.
Lobbying today tends to cover a multitude of activities, from keeping clients informed as to the
possibility of legislative changes which night affect their position, to helping clients become more prominent in the eyes of government, or ensuring that their voice is heard in the correct quarters.
Lobbying can also stretch to actively seeking changes in the law, whether at national or European
level or even globally. The changes may involve the amendment or repeal of legislation, or the introduction of new legislation.
Is the process very expensive?
